WHAT
IS
BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a type of submission grappling art, which relies on the efficient use of leverage and technique in order to control and dominate a larger, stronger opponent. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is also referred to as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, named after the Gracie family of Brazil, who adapted the ancient traditional grappling form into what BJJ is today.
Several facts prove the efficiency of BJJ as a self-defence/real fight situation discipline. For starters, BJJ was transformed by Hélio Gracie, a man of frail physique, who had to adapt the art to people of his size and lack of special athletic abilities. Hélio would go on to defeat several larger opponents in his professional fighting career.
BJJ has been adopted by the most respected law enforcement agencies and military branches around the world. For example, in the U.S, BJJ has reportedly been adopted by The Army Special Forces, US Army Rangers, US Navy SEALs, the CIA, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps and US Coast Guard.
Another factor that serves as a testament to the efficiency of BJJ is the fact that the absolute majority of professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters today have included BJJ into their training and practice it on a regular basis.
